Murray County Courthouse
Type:Heritage

Murray County Courthouse The Doric-styled courthouse was erected in 1816 & is one of only three domed courthouses in the State of Georgia. A scandalous history engulfs the courthouse. In a controversy during the plannning, Murray County Commissioners went to jail for contempt rather than alter the building plans to cater to one judge's wishes. The commissioners' fight went all the way to the Georgia State Supreme Court before the matter was settled in their favor. The first court session was held in February 1917, and court is still held there today.
