Western and Atlantic Railroad Tunnel

Western and Atlantic Railroad Tunnel Completed in 1850 and an engineering marvel of its time, it's the oldest railroad tunnel in the southeast. On May 7, 1864, Sherman occupied Tunnel Hill and set up headquarters in the nearby Clisby Austin House. Reenactment on site each September. Open daylight hours. (Tunnel may not always be accessible due to continuing development of area)

Directions: Hwy 41 in Tunnel Hill, between Dalton and Ringgold. Turn by the bridge over the railroad tracks onto Oak Street. Go straight at the curve by the historic markers, through the covered bridge.
